Some species such as Phlox paniculata (Garden
Phlox) grow upright, while others such as Phlox subulata (Moss
Phlox) spread in a mat like ground cover. Here is a photo record of a
tremendous area of phlox which is growing in Takinoue, Hokkaido in Northern
Japan. There is a spectacular area of about 10 hectares of gentle slopes
covered in this type of phlox growing in an easily accessible are within
the township itself. There are whole hillsides covered in vast swathes of
red, purple and pink shades of this moss like phlox. The effect is
stunning.
