From the Chair

Have you traversed our city lately and seen its changing face? New housing developments to the north, south, and all other points of the compass. The Rogers’ house has been demolished to make way for offices or shops and the old butter factory is no longer, although we admit that it has tidied up this busy corner. I know it’s hard to see these and other buildings disappear to be replaced by modern designs. We could be our own worst enemy in that, as owners, we seem to lack the ability to conserve and maintain these heritage buildings.

The last three months have been interesting with various functions and visits by our Society. Our annual dinner was a great evening, where Damien Tripodi gave us a very good insight into the settling of Italian migrants in our region and the contribution they have made to our community.

Twenty people enjoyed a trip to Bairnsdale to visit the clock museum, egg craft gallery and Bairnsdale Historical Society Museum. Those who attended really enjoyed these places, even if the wind spoilt the picnic lunch.

Robena and I spent a weekend at Bairnsdale as guests of the East Gippsland Car Club for the re-enactment of the first car to travel to Ensay from Bairnsdale 100 years ago. Over 200 veteran cars took part and the ‘Olds’ was the oldest car there, creating plenty of interest.

With Christmas right around the corner, I wish you an enjoyable time with your loved ones and trust Santa brings you good cheer. Many thanks to all who have played some part in assisting with the running of the Society.

Till we meet again,

take care

Jim
