From the Chair

Though short weeks have thrown working bees and open days out at the society, several members have been busy researching requests for information, visiting other societies, and participating in the annual Combined Gippsland Historical Society meeting, this year hosted at Sale. Four members attended a book launch at Moe Historical Society about the naming of streets in the Moe and Newborough area.

You may recall that Mr Barry Farmer donated his President’s allowance to the TDHS to have a book written on the past presidents of the shire. We now have a couple of volunteers researching and compiling information for this, so thank you to those people.

The Making Tracks display, celebrating 150 years of rail in Victoria, is coming together. This display commences 11th July and finishes 28th August 2005. We have asked other Societies to help with Gippsland rail photos and stories to add to the display, however the response has been a little on the light side thus far. Traralgon is the only Gippsland town to host the display.

The heritage overlay that the Latrobe City is working on has come to a slow down as they wait on consultants to put in their final report.

We have some interesting guest speakers lined up this year - so far Barry Sykes has spoken on the rail system in Victoria and Australia, and next will be Bernie Dingle from the Light Horse Museum at Nar Nar Goon.

Dawn, Ron and myself put together a display for the Paperlink (APM) Open Day. There was much interest in and many photos taken of the Oldsmobile. Interest was also shown in our display, and sales of publications were the best we have had for awhile.

Well that's all the news for the moment.

Till we meet again,
take care,
Jim
