The First Traralgon State School Building
by Lois Couch (information from ‘Tableau in Time’)
Traralgon’s first state school building, currently located in Hourigan Road, Morwell, has served the community well for over 100 years. It is now owned by the Victorian Scout Association and on offer for no more than the cost of its removal.

Built in 1872 in Campbell Street, Traralgon, it was situated where the ambulance depot now operates. It was relocated in 1914 to the Grey Street school grounds for Higher Elementary students and was eventually transported to Morwell where it is believed to have been utilised by the Morwell Band and, of more recent years, become headquarters for the Guides and Scouts’ movement.
This building has accommodated many students from Traralgon as well as band musicians and has been the headquarters for the training of young people in the community – so many memories and events for many people associated with this long-serving building.
We thank Mr Jack O’Brien for bringing the plight of this building to our attention.
