January

Traralgon and Sale bands held a contest in Traralgon, on Sunday 14th January, in aid of Sale hospital.

February  

The JOURNAL published an outstanding "Back to Traralgon" issue on Saturday, 24th February, with 8 pages of old photos.  Profit from "Back To" was £616.15.11d.
The next day, Sunday 25th February, 4 years after the war ended and over 12 months of solid discussion, the Soldiers Memorial was finally unveiled by Hon. G. H. Wise, who made feeling reference to the 300 local men who had enlisted and the 54 who never returned.  The Town Band was present, together with all ex-servicemen in uniform.  Cost of the Memorial was £731 (£570 for erection, balance for ground work, gardens and circular picket fence. The Soldier was turned around in February 1979 to face West, and names of the men who fell in World War 2 and Vietnam were added to the stone walls in front, after 33 years. A Queen Carnival was held on Thursday 1st March.
Mr. Berryman's house, at "Hilltop" was burnt to the ground, 2nd March
Traralgon R.S.L. disbanded at meeting 27th March.

April

Shops closed at 10.45 a.m.  until 11.30 a.m. Anzac Day, Wednesday 25th April.
Town Band leader resigned and Mr. Wedlock took over in April.

A plaque to Rev. Wilson, who served Traralgon Presbyterian Church from 1878 to 1907, was unveiled at a service on Sunday, 24th June.

Retired Police Senior Constable J. Chenhall died, at Ivanhoe, on 12th October.

November

Alex Lancaster died 8th November, (aged 32).  His funeral was very large as he was a member of Druids, Argyle Lodge, Football Club, Town Band, Fire Brigade, employed at Traralgon Butter Factory, and an ex-serviceman.

December

Miss Vi Chaundy was the first lady in Victoria to take and receive a Cream Tester's Certificate, and was Acting Traralgon Butter Factory Manager at one time.
