EXTRACTS FROM THE TRARALGON "JOURNAL"  1934

January   1934

The Traralgon Band gave a fine performance at the Cowwarr Swing Bridge New Year's Day sports. 
First Const. Peter Milne retired on 3rd January after 14 years in Traralgon.
Over 200 people were at the camping ground over Christmas.

February   1934

The State School Mothers' League ran their annual train trip to the Melbourne Zoo, 24th. February.
Amby Ryan, new host of "Traralgon Hotel" 12th February after returning from Melbourne to farm at Tyers for some years.
The Rev. J.H.Blundell turned the first sod for the Hotham Street Town Baths, 9th February.
The Tourist League was formed 15th February.
Old Pine Trees around the Catholic Church were cut down in February.
The Traralgon Bike Club was formed, in Don Wallace's Bike Shop, 28th February.
Mrs. Harriet Scarffe died 27th February, aged 109, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wellington, Glengarry.

March   1934

Mr. W.J. Cuthill was appointed Clerk of Courts, to succeed Mr. Goff, 1st March.
Charlie Wall, at the Balook Sports on 3rd March, ascended a tree to the height of 250 ft. in 7 minutes and lopped off the top.
350 people, in buses and 150 private cars, travelled to the annual Railway picnic at the Sandbank, Sunday, 4th March.
The Rev. W.C.H. Brenton, of Tasmania, succeeded the Rev.T. Stanley at the Methodist Church, 15th March.
Dr Rees, replaced Mr. Bill McIntosh as Golf Club President, 13th March.

April  1934

On 7th April, Mrs. Burnet's home and garden in Hickox St. were open to horticulturists.
A local Centenary Committee was formed llth April to celebrate the landing of the Henty family at Portland (18.10.1834).
Mr. Bill Ikin took delivery of a new Terraplane car, 23rd April.

May  1934

First Const. Poulter left for Melbourne in May after 9 years in Traralgon.
First Const.Lowe succeeded Poulter, 23rd May.
Empire Day was celebrated in the Town Hall on the night of 24th May

June   1934

"Yerrang" Park, named by the Tourist League (meaning "leafy").
State School scholars planted 1,100 pines at Switchback

July  1934

The new Crown Hotel was opened for business 9th July (host M. Phelan).
Diggers again despatched two 15 ton trucks of firewood to Melbourne and 10 ton to Sale Hospital, in July.

August   1934

Over 1,000 attended the herd Testers' Ball in the Town Hall, on 9th August. It went until 3 a.m.
Mr. Walter West resigned from Council, 17th August, after 27 years as Shire Secretary. Miss Eva West took his place.
Rev. & Mrs. Chalinor were farewelled at Presbyterian Church after 5 years, on 21st August, and Rev. G.G.Robertson took his place.

September   1934

Mr. West died 5th September.
The Country Women held an antique exhibition in the Mechanics Hall, 28th September

October  1934

Mrs. E. Wills took over the Traralgon "Coffee Palace" on 4th October after 11 years, from Miss Broderick.
The Golf Club purchased a horse-drawn lawn-mower in October.
Saturday, 27th October, a special Journal, Centenary Issue, prior to the visit of the Duke of Gloucester, by train, and later at the Football oval where rain marred the events and the school sports were postponed.

November  1934

There was a big display at Traralgon on 3rd November, with world finest axemen. A Philippino Band, from the American Cruiser "Augusta" marched to the ground from the station.
Reg Davidson, with a 6 yd, start, won from Mary Huffer, and was presented with a gold medal at the sports finals.
Mr. H.E.F. Lampe, aged 73 died in November (former Headmaster).
On 9th November Mr.Tucker turned on water from the new Hilltop Service Basin.
Mr. Hourigan bought Neilson Estate and 23 acres in November.

December  1934

A disastrous flood swept the town and valley on Saturday, lst December. Marooned families were rescued by a boat brought from Lakes Entrance, including the Maskrey, Croft and Elliott families, Jim McLean, Jim Stoddart, Ted Thresher and the Kenyons. It was the worst flood in local history and washed away the Glengarry railway line.
Traralgon Scouts, Cubs and Guides travelled on a special train to the first Australian Jamboree, held at Frankston as part of Victoria's Centenary celebrations.
