EXTRACTS FROM THE TRARALGON "JOURNAL"  1935

January   1935

The Hotham Street swimming pool opened 14th January.
Grand Junction Hotel changed hands from Waldron to Alan Jeffries in January.
Yerrang Park and Le Roy Reserves were both officially opened on A.N.A. day, 28th January. Mrs. J. Rogers cut the ribbon at Yerrang and Mrs. P. Johnson at Le Roy. Between 400 and 500 people were present and enjoyed the music of the Traralgon Town Band.

February   1935

Mr.Dowsett became the new assistant Scout Master in February.
Mrs.Betsy Pearce, of Loch Park, died 28th February, aged 90. She was born in England and came to Adelaide 43 years ago, to settle in Gormandale via Bendigo and Glenmaggie. She had 18 children, 94 grandchildren, 198 great-grandchildren and 3 great- great-grandchildren.

March    1935

Mr. Ernie Channing started a third milk-round in March.
Mr. Ewen Kennedy purchased Mrs. McNabb's bakery in March.
Mrs. Robertson opened a fish shop next to the Journal office, 14th March.
First Const. J.L.Lowe was transferred and P.Cullen took over in March.

April   1935

May   1935

Traralgon Diggers used the golf course on King's Birthday, 6th May, for the first time.
Lord Huntingfield visited Traralgon, 21st May.
Firemen, held their first Ball on Monday, 20th May.
For the first time in Traralgon, a debutante set of 9 girls was presented at the Matron's Ball , 27th May.

June   1935

lst June, Mr. Tucker was appointed full-time to Shire Engineer.
Archdeacon Blundell was farewelled, after 11 years, 4th June.
Mr. Charlie Pearce was selected as the new Band Master on the retirement of Mr. Collins at the end of June, and the band moved from Tanner 's to the rear of Fred Hesse's

July  1935

Messrs. Price & Saunders commenced sawmilling at Tyers, above the lime kilns on Walhalla road-, 1st July.
Rev. S.T. Ball welcomed to Traralgon Church of England, 4th July. ,
A working bee of 50 citizens planted English Ash Trees in Seymour Street, 27th July.

August   1935

Fire destroyed the home of Mr. Fred Williams, at the Long Bridge, on 7th August
The Rechabites Junior "Evening Star" Tent No.452 reformed on 24th August and 52 candidates served the pledge. Chief Ruler Bro. Noel Plant was elected, assisted by Betty Layton, Hope Scott, Harold Bickerton, Ian Tucker, Betty Young, Clarice and Pearl Curnick and Coralie Brumley.

September    1935

Messrs. W.J., J.H., and E.A.Stuckey and Mr. I.Cone received Royal Humane Society silver medals and Dr.Rees a bronze medal for rescue work in the great 1935 floods.

October   1935

The Argyle Lodge celebrated its Jubilee, 12th October (first formed in 1885).
Alf Brereton purchased his corner block in Franklin St, and 2 adjoining shops in 0ctober, whilst S.P.Stoddart purchased his shop adjoining on the north side.

November  1935

A tender was accepted for a new bridge over the Latrobe R. at the Bluff, by C.E. Patience, for £1,318,13.Od., 8th November.
Lord and Lady Huntingfield were cheered by 1000 school children at the station on their way to Sale, 12th November.
The Bandmaster formed a new orchestra and gave a concert, 17th November,
Layton Bros, sold their business to W.A. Purvis in November, after commencing in1907.

December  1935

The Traralgon band played Christmas Carols on Christmas Eve.
