March 1959

Traralgon's new Olympic Pool held an opening Carnival on Saturday, 14th. It was officially opened that day by the Hon. W.O.Fulton, M.L.C. The Red Cross held a great street procession from the Post Office to the recreation ground. Both John Landy and T.V. star Bert Newton were guests at the ground.

April 1959

The "Journal" produced a photo of the Traralgon "Legion of Ex-Servicemen" at their special Smoke Night on the 13th.

May 1959

The old Traralgon Swimming Pool at the east end of Hotham Street was filled with soil to form a car park (today, the Princes Highway, south of Livingstone Street, runs over the site. J.D.).
The "Fernhill" property at Loy Yang was sold. One third was bought by Hugh Dunbar, and two-thirds by General Motors Holden. This historic property was bought by John Fowler Turnbull from the original settler, James Rentoul, in 1846, who in turn sold it to William Whittakers in 1871 and, according to his diary, was "in a primeval  state of red gum forest and ti-tree swamps". At its height, "Fernhill" bred 60 - 70 horses annually for the Indian horse trade.

July 1959

Traralgon Scots formed  a local Caledonian Society, in the Cumberland Hall. Fred Stuart was elected Chairman and John Davidson Secretary.

September 1959

Recorded that Golf was first played in Traralgon in about 1905 on land at "Traralgon Park" belonging to Mr. Jack Campbell. Mr. Bert Chappell, his brother Fred and Miss Row were players.

November 1959

Both Monsignor J. O"Mara, after 25 years, and Father Daly were given a church farewell.

December  1959

The State Savings Bank celebrated 50 years, being first formed in Traralgon on 16th November, 1909.  A good photo of the bank was published and owned by J.H. Rogers.  Its first manager was T.F. Davies; the population was 1500; there were 7 hotels, 5 churches and a butter and bacon factory.   A list of 17 managers was given.  The 33ft frontage at £10 per foot was bought for £330.0.0d.
